Why we show nutrient content by calories not grams
Looking at nutrient content on a calorie basis rather than on a weight basis is a fairer and more meaningful method of comparing foods. It eliminates the distorting effect of water content in foods, and thus gives a more accurate picture of nutrient density.
This method is also more aligned with our bodies’ actual dietary equation. It does not matter to the body how many grams or ounces of food is consumed in a day, but only how much energy (i.e., calories) is consumed, and that it came from a good balance of protein, fat, or carbohydrates. And that balance is easier to intuitively understand when it’s expressed as a percentage of protein/fat/carb calories of total calories.
Moreover, within its daily calorie budget, the body needs to get sufficient amounts of micronutrients (vitamins and minerals). And so, to eat a healthy nutritious diet, we must choose foods that give us ample amounts of micronutrients for the calories we eat.
